SNOW LEOPARDS OF NORTHERN INDIA

This unbelievable journey takes you into the territory of the elusive Snow Leopard in the Hemis National Park situated in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. The terrain, altitude and temperatures make this a physically demanding trip. However, it offers not only the chance to see the snow leopard, but other wildlife of the area such as the blue sheep or Bharal, as well as bird species. The tour is done in the presence of well trained trackers and guides who know the area well, and spend their days looking for these mystical creatures.

Trek Grade: 2c (FP)

A combination of very long days with steep paths, boulders and mountain scrambling. Glaciers and snow may be encountered at high altitude. There is no need for technical climbing experience. Medium risk of altitude sickness. Altitudes up to 6000m. Good cardio vascular fitness is needed with weight and circuit training and running. Lots of hill walking. Backpacks will weigh about 4-5kg and contain water, camera and essentials. Trek weight loss in the region of 4kg. Fully Portered

Detailed Itinerary

Day-1: Arrival Delhi

Arrive Delhi the capital of India. Our tour representative will welcome you at the airport arrival lounge with. Transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel. Hotel check in time is 1200hrs.

Day-2: DELHI-LEH (B, L & D)

Early morning transfer from hotel to airport to board flight to Leh. Flight departs at 0630hrs and arrives Leh at 0750hrs

Meeting assistance on arrival and transfer to hotel. Rest of the day is free for acclimatization. Overnight at hotel

Day-3: LEH (B, L & D)

After a leisurely breakfast we drive just over half an hour to Thiksay monastery, set on a hill it is one of the most impressive Gompas in Ladakh, It has several temples, one of which contains a superb statue of the Future Buddha. After visiting Thiksay we return to Leh for lunch. Late afternoon we will drive to visit Shanti Stupa followed by visit to the Namgyal Tsemo Gompa of Ladakh which was founded by King Tashi Namgyal in the early 15th century, around the year 1430. This fort was once the royal residence of the Namgyal dynasty and is flanked by some temples built in veneration of the guardian deities, these temples are still standing today, unlike the fort which is almost in ruins, temples are visited everyday by a monk who opens the doors to light the butter-filled lamps every morning and evening in adoration of the deities. Overnight at the hotel.

Day-4: LEH-HUSING (B, L & D)

After breakfast drive from Leh to Zingchen (2 hrs drive) and from there we start trekking to Husing (2 hrs trek). Husing is one of the better areas for the snow leopard. There are 3 valleys that meet here and these are all used by the snow leopard as they move to lower altitudes following their prey. Snow Leopards are some of the most elusive big cats remaining in the world because they live in such remote areas of Central Asia. There are thought to be between 3,500 and 7000 snow leopards left in the wild. Overnight camping.

Day-5-8: HUSING (B, L & D)

Due to the rugged terrain of the Himalayas you are likely to see agile footed sheep and goats. They can move easily through the mountainous regions of the Himalayas from one pasture to the next. During the winter months the Bharal or Blue Sheep move down to lower altitudes where there is food and they are followed by the snow leopards and other predators like the Tibetan Wolf. These animals form the primary diet for the snow leopards. It is by tracking the movements of these animals and their trails and tracking spoor left by the snow leopard moving that one can improve the chances of seeing the snow leopard in their natural environment. Walk around Husing / Rumbak or Trabung in search of Snow Leopard. Overnight camping.

Day-9: HUSING-LEH (B, L & D)

Morning possibility of wildlife viewing in Husing valley followed by trek to Zingchen to drive back to Leh. Upon arrival in Leh, check into your hotel. Rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight in hotel.

Day-10: LEH-ULLEY (B, L & D)

Morning drive to Ulley to photograph Ibex and other wildlife. Overnight in a home stay. Normally one family has 3 or 4 rooms for the guests so depending up the group size we keep them with 2-3 families. All homes are nearby-walking distances.

Day-11: ULLEY (B, L & D)

Spend full day to photograph Ibex and other wildlife available in the area. Overnight in Homestay.

Day-12: ULLEY-LEH (B, L & D)

Drive back to Leh. Upon arrival in Leh, check into the hotel.

Day-13: LEH-DELHI (B, L & D)

After early breakfast transfer to airport for flight to Delhi. Flight departs at 0830hrs and arrives Delhi at 0950hrs Meeting assistance on arrival and transfer to hotel. Day is at leisure till evening. After dinner, on time transfer to the airport to board flight for onward journey.

Trekking Peaks in Nepal
These two peaks are called trekking peaks. Unfortunately, this has led many to believe that there is no difficulty involved. This is not the case. Anything involving the use of ropes, crampons, climbing gear, climbing skill, snow gullies etc can be difficult, even if it is just for one day.

Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal at 6654m. Island Peak is slightly lower at 6160m.

If you are looking at something tougher than a standard trek and are keen to try adding a peak, these are good options.
