CLIMBING MOUNT KILIMANJARO
MACHAME ROUTE KILIMANJARO
The most scenic route up Kilimanjaro is Machame, which winds up clearly
laid paths through a forest of violets and red-hot pokers. Starting in
comfortable temperatures, you trek along paths of moss and lichens which hang
on trees, clothed in a blanket of mist. Above the forest, the
vegetation changes to scrubland with lobelia’s and daisy bushes,
blooming like overgrown pompoms. Toward Shira ridge, the terrain becomes more
rocky and melts into an expansive alpine desert, decorated with large
deposits of volcanic rock and grey dust. Glacial ice pours off the summit,
stretching ice fingers down to a height of 4800m. Here you
have breaktaking views of Lava Tower. Kilimanjaro houses one of
the most circular volcanic vents in the world, Ash Pit, and above the
crater and Furtwangler Glacier, stands Uhuru Peak. At 5895m, it
is the highest peak in Africa, and highest freestanding volcano in the
world. A sunrise summit climb on a clear day, and you feel like you are
on top of the world. With 5 or 6 days of trekking behind you and a
gold certificate in hand, it’s an experience that will live with you for a
lifetime.
Machame Route Climb has the higher success rate

CLIMBING KILIMANJARO MACHAME ROUTE
DAY 1
Arrive Kilimanjaro
Airport and transfer to
hotel.
Day 2: Kilimanjaro Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After an early breakfast
you head to Machame village and on to
Machame gate
to start trekking. Rain in the Machame forest is possible. About half
way you will stop for lunch before climbing to Machame camp.
Day 3: Machame to Shira
You head out of
Machame camp and climb quite steeply for about an hour and then follow a more gently gradient toward the
base Shira Plateau. Then you will traverse up the rocky outcrop before heading
in an easterly direction, to Shira Camp.
Day
4: Shira to Baranco
After breakfast, you leave the moorland scrub behind and enter a moonscape of
semi-alpine desert, while you hike constantly toward Lava Tower.
After Lava Tower your route will continue down by almost 680m to Barranco.
Day 5:
Climb Barranco (3860m) to Barafu (4550m)
Early morning, you will
climb the Great Barranco Wall – a climb easier than anticipated.
The route goes through the
Karanga Valley over several ridges and valleys where you see the magnificent giant Senecio Kilimanjari plant. You then join up with your later descent route where you trek left up the ridge before reaching Barafu Hut.
The summit is 1345m up.
Day 6:
Barafu (4550m)- Uhuru Peak (5895m)-Mweka (3100m).
You will rise around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits you
will trek off “pole pole” into the night. Heading in a North westerly direction you will ascend through heavy scree towards Stella (5685) on the crater rim. The hike up is about 6 hours and is for many climbers, the most mentally and physically challenging part of the route. It is advisable NOT to stop too long at
Stella (5685m). The remainder of the climb to Kilimanjaro Uhuru Peak will take
anything from 1-2 hours.
After your moment of
glory on the summit of Kilimanjaro, you will trek back to Barafu and then down
to Mweka hut (3100m).
Day 7: Mweka (3100m)- Mweka Gate (1980m)
Today is a short hike. At Mweka gate you will sign your name and details in a register
and to receive you
machame summit certificates. Those who reached Stella (5685m) are issued with green certificates and those
to Uhuru
Peak (5895m), gold certificates.
In Mweka village you will meet up with your team and bus, and
return to the hotel a long over due hot shower.
DAY 8: After breakfast, transfer to
Kilimanjaro International Airport for you departure flight.
