CLIMB MT ELGON UGANDA
Mount Elgon
is named after the Elgeyo tribe, who once lived in huge
caves on the south side of the mountain. It was known as "Ol
Doinyo Ilgoon" (Breast Mountain) by the Maasai and as "Masaba"
on the Ugandan side. It is the oldest and largest solitary
volcano in East Africa, covering an area of around 3500 km˛
ITINERARY
Day One: Arrival at Entebbe airport, meet and greet and transfer to the hotel in Kampala . Change money, briefing, and the rest of the day is free. No meals included. Overnight at Speke Hotel.
Day Two: After breakfast we depart towards Mbale, a city situated at the bottom of Mt. Elgon . We will be briefed about the trekking in Mt. Elgon´s NP office in Mbale. After lunch
we go to Sipi Falls in the foothills of Mt Elgon. It is a series of three spectacular waterfalls were we will do a walk for about 1.5 hours to enjoy the views of Mt Elgon above
them. Then we will proceed to Budadiri for overnight. Overnight at Last Chance Hotel. (B/L/D)
Day Three: Early breakfast, meet our rangers and porters and then we will start our climb to Mt. Elgon (4321m) . Today it is a 6-8 hour walk, about 14 Kms. The Sasa trail will lead you to the Mudange cliffs (The rock of death). Just at the top you will have spectacular views, just beyond the Bumasola (1770m), of Budadiri and Mbale town. You will then proceed to Sasa river camp. The walk will take you mainly through a thick montane forest,
and then bamboo forest. You could see leopards, forest elephants and antelopes, mostly the duikers and also some mountain bird spices like the beautiful great blue
turacos, fly catchers, endangered Lammergeyers, the rare Jackson’s Francolin, Guinea fowls, Sunbirds and many others. Overnight in camping at Sasa Camp.

Day Four: Early in the morning, we will start our walk ascending Mt Elgon. You will walk through four distinct forest types, the lush montane forest, the fascinating heath and the spectacular moorland hyracs, the Elgon teak, which contains stands of some of the most rare and endemic plant species like the Giant Lobelia Elgonensis, dotted clusters of peculiar Groundsels that are really unique to Africa, also you will encounter the dense scrubs and brilliant
everlasting wild flowers. Early afternoon we will arrive at our second camp. Today the walk will take 4-6 hours, about 9 Kms. Overnight in camping at Mude Camp (3.500m). (B/L/D)
Day Five: Early in the morning after breakfast, we will ascend through a wide open grassland with beautiful scenic views of rugged peaks. The wagagai trail will take you to the top of Jackson’s summit at 4165m here you will have views of the collapsed craters, covering over 40km wide. You will then hike to the top of Mt. Elgon (4321m), where we will arrive in about 6 hours. After relaxing we descend to our camp. Overnight in camping at Mude Camp (3.500m). (B/L/D)
Day Six: Today after the breakfast we descend to Budadiri along the Sasa Trail through bamboo forest and thick montane forest down to the Mudange Cliff. Thereafter we will walk through the coffee fields, the onion and the banana plantations. The vegetation and climate changes a lot, which is very interesting. It is a 7-8 hour walk, about 30 Kms. Then we drive to Mbale for dinner and overnight. Overnight at Mt. Elgon Hotel. (B/L/D)
Day Seven: Drive to Jinja. Lunch and we will visit the Source of the Nile and Bujagali Falls . There is the possibility (optional, not included) to take a 2-hour boat cruise at the source of the Nile . Proceed to Entebbe , crossing Kampala . Dinner. Overnight at Sophie’s Motel. (B/L/D)
Day Eight: Transfer to airport for departure or continue with longer program. (B)
